Sydney group Devotional will bring their scenic, slow-burning music to The Vanguard for one night only to celebrate the launch of their debut album Wild Blue, with special guests to be announced.
Devotional have become a mainstay of Sydney’s underground music scene, known for their dreamy sound, unique aesthetic and independent ethos. Combining woozy guitars and driving rhythms with poignant, direct lyrics reminiscent of pop and country classics, Devotional have developed their own brand of indie, ‘like the Cowboy Junkies writing the soundtrack for a Twin Peaks episode’ (Tone Deaf 2013).
Front-woman and songwriter Madelaine Lucas (daughter of punk legend Steve Lucas of X) has been recording and releasing her music from the age of 17. Her solo project, A Casual End Mile, gained national attention after her first single ‘Fox And A Prayer’ was ‘unearthed’ by Triple J radio in 2009.
With a full-band line-up including Robert Irish, Ben James (Talons, Songs) and Ryan Adamson (Regular John), Devotional spent 2014 crafting their songs while touring the American West Coast. Lucas explains: ‘California is the place that nurtured so many of our musical heroes. A lot of inspiration for the new songs came from wanting to harness our influences and turn these imagined stories and landscapes into something new that reflected us as a band, where we have come from, and the direction we’re heading in.’
Influenced by their time on the road but recorded closer to home in country NSW, Wild Blue is a love letter from one-side of the Pacific Ocean to the other. Recorded by Wade Keighran (Wolf & Cub, The Scare) over ten days last summer, Devotional’s 9-track album reflects this journey in their most refined release to-date.
In 2015, Devotional have appeared at the boutique Sydney festival Secret Garden alongside Sharon Van Etten (USA) and Jack Ladder & the Dreamlanders, and supported Steve Smyth and Youth Group.
