As a world driven by innovation and discovery becomes increasingly hostile towards facts it is more important than ever to show why science is not just fascinating, but fundamental to all of humanity today and in the future. Every scientist believes their field is vital, but which is truly the most important? To settle it once and for all, the Adelaide University Sciences Association has invited a panel of experts to argue why their field will be the one to save the world!
The debate will be held in the historic Bonython Hall at The University of Adelaide on 16 August at 1pm.

Representing Biology will be South Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Leanna Read. A physiologist by training, expert in biotechnology and commercialization, and Chair of the South Australian Science Council, Dr Read has actively supported SA’s growing life science industry for many years.
Associate Professor Drew Evans of Energy and Advanced Manufacturing at the University of South Australia, Australian Research Council fellow at the Future Industries Institute, and recipient of the 2013 SA Tall Poppy of the Year prize and 2016 BioSA Young Achiever Award will show us just how important Chemistry is in paving the way to a better future.
Fighting for Physics shall be the Director of the Institute of Photonics and Advanced Sensing, Professor Andre Luiten. The award-winning physicist is developing measurement technologies of astonishing precision, opening up possibilities in the field that has changed the world by helping build our modern society.
By bringing scientists’ usually-private debates onto the grand stage, we aim to showcase research at the cutting edge of each field, and highlight how it will directly impact all our lives. Along the way we hope you will gain a better understanding of what science looks like today, and what students considering further STEM education can look forward to.
